07.01.2019:  IMPROVING RECRUITMENT IN CANCER CLINICAL TRIALS

Recruiting cancer patients for clinical trials is extremely difficult. A recent survey (CTTS) showed that protocol related and oncologists-related issues are, significant barriers to recruitment. Additionally, patients related barriers also affect the clinical enrolment.

Individual, personalized medicine represent the present and the future of oncology clinical research. Protocols and recruitment strategies must be based upon individual patients need and not on a cancer type.

Major analysis of recruitment barriers suggest that electronic medical records and real world data should be used to identify potential cancer patients.

Study managers should establish relationships with patient organisations and trusted oncologists to create programs for patients who may be eligible for new clinical trials.

Misconceptions about clinical trials are important reasons patients refuse participation. 37% believed that treatment would be less effective than standard therapy. 31% worried about being given placebo and 22% feared being treated as a guinea pig.

Accurate, accessible information distributed by network and media channels such as safe clinical trials new therapies may offer better treatment option are important to convience patients for the value of clinical trials.

The value of e-patient is unequivocal. Social media built good, strong relationship with patients and this may increase recruitment in clinical trials.

According to FDA, only 6% of clinical trials are completed on time. 80% are delayed at least for one month. 20% of trials never manage to enroll a single patient. 50% of clinical research sites enroll one or no patients in their suites.
